Monday-- Now, we should be analyzing the news by using the principles of journalism, which are:
- Journalism' first obligation is to the truth
- Its first loyalty is to citizens
- Its essence is a discipline of verification
- Its practitioners must maintain an independence from those they cover
- It must serve as an independent monitor of power
- It must provide a forum for public criticism and compromise
- It must strive to make the significant interesting and relevant
- It must keep the news comprehensive and proportional
- Its practitioners must be allowed to exercise their personal conscience
When considering these principles to the New York Times, it is not as easy as one may think. Most of the news in today's paper is mostly about the War on Terror, murder, and Mexico's earthquake. These stories seem to be more of a direct presentation of the events of America. These issues are ture, disciplined when it comes to verification, the journalists are independent of the news story, and there is significant interests in the subjects because everyone wants to know about it.
